Snapshot of Meg’s ministry in the Eastern Bay of Plenty

-

Ministry in the Eastern Bay of Plenty began 16yrs ago in response to a vision shared by the District Health Board seeking a social worker to work with women who had any part of her body removed; women who miscarried, and women who were abused or affected by family violence. This vision fitted well with our Charism as Sisters of St Joseph and the Province commitment to resource rural areas. It also provided me with the opportunity to integrate my nursing, social work, counseling qualifications and former experience in both health and social services.

Very early on, in response to a huge unmet need, I began to specialise in the support and education of women diagnosed with cancer and in particular, with breast cancer. In 1999 we developed a specialist Breast Care Team in Whakatane Hospital and I had the privilege of facilitating weekly breast clinics for many years.

Although my ‘job’ has changed a lot over the years, primarily I remain involved in the psycho-social support of adults undergoing major surgery; providing education towards gaining Informed Consent; facilitating outpatient clinics; co-coordinating admissions, discharges and after care.

This multi-faceted work also encompasses general support, education (including developing resource material), counseling (grief and loss; trauma; anticipatory death); case management and networking.
At local, regional and national levels I have had the privilege of working with like-minded people in writing, implementing and challenging health policies and practices to ensure just and equitable access to health services.

Separate from my paid employment I facilitate "Look Good Feel Better" ‘make-over’ workshops for women undergoing treatment for cancer; Myers Briggs Type Indicator workshops and therapeutic Grief and Loss Retreats for women 12 months post cancer treatment.

I am privileged to be part of a group supporting the ministry at Tenison (Warkworth) and am also a delegate on the Josephite Justice Network.

In 1986, what began as a desire to write my father’s life story, developed into an addiction to genealogical research which leads to late nights, weird conversations, heaps of satisfaction and blessings galore.

Collectively these aspects of my ministry are both fulfilling and challenging. They give expression to my passion for justice, and to my interest in feminist and eco-spirituality.

I consider myself truly blessed in being Called to ministry in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
