Memories of Mary MacKillop -
Sr Leonorus (Mary Jane) Edwards

When I was a little girl preparing for my First Communion at Waimate, New Zealand, there was an extremely poor and ragged boy among those preparing. Each day, Mother took this child for instruction. On First Communion morning the little boy appeared in a beautiful new suit (purchased by Mother). His medal with the ribbon was pinned neatly to his coat and he took his place among the boys as though he, too, had parents who cared for him. Mother Mary could not bear to see one of God’s little ones neglected.
Mother’s humility was shown in her willingness to take any sister’s place in the community should that sister be unable to attend to her duty. At Port Chalmers I saw Mother supply a sister’s place during a visit of a few weeks to that convent.
