Sr Veronica Slattery

Veronica Slattery was born and grew up in Norwood in South Australia, the 7th child of Irene & Charles Slattery.     She was educated at St Joseph's Primary and High Schools.   The call to Religious Life was strong in her during these years.

After leaving school Veronica was a secretary at a Catholic law firm before responding to the call to Religious Life.   Veronica travelled to Sydney in 1958 to join the Sisters of St Joseph at the Mother House and was professed in 1961.

The first 5 years in ministry were spent in Victoria as a primary school teacher.

After making her Final Vows in 1967 Veronica returned to South Australia to continue teaching.

In 1972 a change in ministry brought the challenges of Motor Mission ministry and later Parish Ministry in Adelaide and Port Pirie Dioceses.    Hospitality at our House of Spirituality in Aldgate was a privilege from 2001-2003.  During the later part of 2003 Veronica was given the opportunity to undertake a renewal in Boston USA to prepare her for another change of ministry.

On return to Australia she spent a year maintaining our Josephite presence at St Catherine's Aged Care facility at Berri in South Australian Riverland.

In 2004 recognising the value of ministry there Veronica joined the staff as Pastoral Care Co-ordinator. This ministry has given the privileged opportunity to spend time with the aging residents of the Riverland and to be with their families in a pastoral role especially at the time of the death of their loved ones.

My journey as a Sister Joseph has been varied and challenging but it has also been a life able to be lived in the service of so many Australians.
