In East Melbourne, just a few blocks from Mary's birthplace in Fitzroy, the city of Melbourne and Victoria in general, celebrated the opening of a centre named in her honour by the women who have continued her work for more than a century.

Within the Centre, on the land she purchased in 1901, in the building she designed and saw completed in 1902, Melbourne's newest Museum will capture the attention of all Melburnians! The Mary MacKillop Museum is a stunning visual representation of the life and times of the person most often referred to as Mary of the Cross.
The beautifully restored original 1901 house and the adjoining former doctor's town-house, comprise the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre. The Centre also houses a stunning exhibition in the four galleries that comprise the Museum. "Included in the Museum are items from Mary's later life. Many of these personal items, including her wheelchair, are revered as first class relics," said the Museum's curator Sr Helen Smith.

"The city of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and indeed the nation as a whole can celebrate the preservation and restoration of one of Australia's most significant historial sites" said the Centre's recently appointed CEO. The Centre also incorporates two permanent residences, library, archives, meeting rooms, short term accommodation and the stunning 'boutique' museum.
