What We Do...

Irene Villa

Irene Villa was named after Sister Irene McCormack, a Sister of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who was murdered by rebels in Peru in May 1991.  Irene was originally from the farming community of Trayning, WA and was one of seven children. Having compoleted her secondary education she entered the Sisters of St Joseph in 1956. In 1987 Irene answered the call to minister with the Peruvian people of Huasahuasi.

Irene Villa is situated at 13 Alexandra Street, South Perth and is nestled in the leafy grounds of the Sisters of St Joseph’s Convent - just one block away from the spectacular Swan River.

The mission of Irene Villa is to “relieve suffering and bring hope” by providing low cost accommodation:

  • for carers and other people needing short respite care
  • for people from the country who need to visit family members in city hospitals
  • for people from the country who need to stay somewhere while they have medical tests or outpatient treatment in a city hospital
  • a place of quiet for private or small group retreats
  • a city base for missionary priests who live in remote country parishes especially those overseas born.

GENERAL INFORMATION


Irene Villa Accommodation includes:

  • Six single rooms, two double rooms with single bunk on top and one twin share
  • Three shared bathrooms
  • Large kitchen, dining room
  • Two lounge / TV rooms
  • Laundry
  • Four private outdoor sitting areas


Facilities and amenities available at Irene Villa include:

  • Phone - A communal phone is available in the small room opposite the kitchen. (please estimate cost of calls and place in jar provided. Dial 0 for an outside line)
  • Transport - Bus: The bus top is located in King Edward Street. The 34 bus travels into the city or in the opposite direction, to Carousel Shopping Centre, Cannington.
    Ferry: At the end of Mends Street the ferry departs for Barrack Street where the free Cat bus goes around the city. There are bus and ferry time table in the phone room.
  • Parking - Parking is available in the parking bays on the opposite side of Alexandra Street. Please keep the driveway to Irene Villa clear as it is the emergency entrance. Secure parking is available upon request.
  • Mass is often celebrated at the Sisters’ Chapel at 9am and usually Sunday Eucharist, at 6.15pm Saturday. Please check with the manager for updated information. Mass is also available at St Columba’s Church just across the road, Saturday eveing 6.30pm, Sunday morning at 7.30am and 9.30am.

Meals

Breakfast - is available in the kitchen each morning and includes cereals, breads, condiments, tea and coffee.

Other Meals - guests are welcome to prepare other meals in the kitchen. Shops are just a short walk away in Angelo Street or a little further, in Mends Street.

Smoking

The property is a smoke free area and so smoking is not permitted inside Irene Villa or on the grounds.

Cost for bed & breakfast:  $30 per person,
$45 per couple

Mary MacKillop Room, Mary MacKillop Bookshop & Peruvian Shop

The Mary MacKillop Room introduces visitors to the life of Blessed Mary MacKillop.

The Peruvian Ministry shop sells items made by poor women of Peru in workshops set up by the Sisters of St Joseph to provide them with an income. The women have been paid for these items and all the money from sales goes directly back into the project.


Do not hesitate to ask to see the Mary MacKillop Room, Mary MacKillop Bookshop or the Peruvian shop.
