Prayer of the Church
From earliest times in the Church, the Daily Prayer followed a simple
pattern of a psalm suitable for the time of day, hymns, intercessions,
blessing, procession. In time the prayer became the prayer of monks
with the whole cycle of the 150 psalms being said over a period
of time. As this was not suitable for the ordinary people a simpler
form of daily prayer arose around the Cathedrals which followed
the early pattern of prayer more closely but added the reading from
scripture. This simpler form is the one used in the Prayer of the
Church for various feasts which follows.
