Western Australia

The Sisters living in Western Australian are stretched far and wide - as do the ministries we undertake. Currently there are 51 Sisters ministering from the remote East Kimberley to the South West corner of the state.

The spirit of the Western Australian Sisters is captured in this painting of Saint Mary MacKillop (right) which evokes a real feeling of ‘WA’ with the Southern Cross star configuration, the beautiful gum tree and of course the country children that walk with Mary in the golden wheat fields.

Our focus is to:

... be deeply contemplative women …
… affirm the way each sister seeks to serve the poor …
… enflesh with renewed energy the compassionate love of God for the destitute …
… work in collaboration with others …
… and be open to honest discernment …

We do this:

In the Kimberley …

Over the years the role of the Sisters has evolved, creating ‘two way’ partnerships and encouraging the Aboriginal people to take part in the decision making processes that affect their lives, community and children.

In the Community …

The Sisters provide counselling services and a sympathetic ear to suit the needs of the moment.

Patients in hospitals and nursing homes benefit from the ministry of the Sisters.

The Sisters’ Place offers safe beds for women who otherwise would ‘sleep rough’ in the Fremantle area.

Products made by women living in poverty in Peru are sold throughout the state providing much needed income for them and their families. Retreat and Spirituality Centres are appreciated by people of all faiths seeking time for reflection.

Places of hospitality offer respite and a quiet space for those in need.

In the Parish …

Sisters can be found in the Parishes’ helping in the work of faith education, providing administrative leadership and performing the duties of the pastoral associate both in city and rural areas.

Never See a Need …

Mary MacKillop believed that God was active in her life and in the lives of her early companions and was calling them to the service of others.
