Hauroto Mission, New Zealand

This ministry provides a mobile ministry to those living in isolated rural communities in the west coast area of the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton.

Travelling by campervan Sr June visits the people of these districts on a monthly basis offering:

  • spiritual enrichment,
  • ongoing faith education and
  • appropriate support.

Hauroto Mission territory is characterised by narrow, winding roads sometimes unsealed and traversing very hilly terrain. ‘SS Hauroto’ was the name of the ship on which the first Sisters of Saint Joseph to come to New Zealand travelled from Melbourne to Port Chalmers in 1883. Sr June is challenged and inspired by the example of these pioneering Sisters.
