Responding Together

Sisters with Fr Chris in St Joseph’s Church, Temuka, Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 1883 after arriving in Temuka, Aotearoa New Zealand, Sr Calasanctius wrote, “Then there were welcomes on all sides and exclamations… We were conducted to the Church”. Those of us present in Temuka on Sunday 3 May, can echo these sentiments 143 years later. We received a great welcome and lots of exclamations of recognition, gratitude, and joy.

After posing for a photo with Fr Chris Friel, we returned to the entry foyer to view the new plaque beneath the window of Mary of the Cross. The plaque acknowledges the over 140 years of service of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in the Parish of Opihi which comprises Temuka, Geraldine, and Pleasant Point.

The Sisters then gathered and entered the Church in procession to their reserved seating, where each was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers and a handmade card from one of the local students.

We joined the community in celebrating Mass in a packed church, a clear acknowledgement of the esteem in which the Sisters’ ministry is held.

After Communion, Sr Jill spoke about the ‘arrival’ of the first Sisters and acknowledged the contribution of local communities to the life and work of the Josephites, as well as their ongoing stewardship of the charism. The parish was then presented with a copy of the painting of The Vision by artist Jan Williamson.

Moving to the hall, phase two of the celebration began, with Sr Lyndall speaking about the journey of walking together shared by the Sisters and local communities. Other Sisters and parishioners then contributed stories and memories of Temuka and the Sisters.

Grace having been offered, we were invited to lunch. Tables groaned with food as the sharing of stories continued and new friendships were formed.

As we headed home, we could truly affirm that we had experienced “welcomes on all sides and exclamations…”

After presenting their gift to the Parish, our Sisters lift their voices in Joseph Holy – a moving moment of prayer, unity, and thanksgiving.
