To commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, we share a story from one of our Incorporated Works, St Anthony’s Family Care and their Figtree Early Learning Centre.
When Rachel, Manager of Figtree Early Learning Centre, sat down with parents Arahia and James, they shared their heartfelt journey of finding the right place for their children.
For James, what first stood out about his son was his unique way of interacting with the world – lining up toys in order and vocalising in ways that revealed his intelligence and personality. Before his autism level three diagnosis and suspected intellectual disability, they had no frame of reference for his behaviour. “He wouldn’t respond when we called his name,” James recalled. “We initially thought he was ignoring us, but it wasn’t that simple.” Despite seeking medical advice and undergoing hearing tests, they realised their son needed more tailored support to thrive.
The family faced stress and anxiety when looking for a daycare that could meet his needs. Previous experiences had left them worried about safety and proper care. “Our biggest concern was safety,” Arahia explained. “But since starting at Figtree, that stress has gone away. Now, I’m excited to see him trying new things, playing with peers, smiling, laughing – it’s unlocked his potential.”

Their experience at Figtree has been transformative. Within months, they noticed remarkable progress. Their son’s social skills flourished – he began interacting with other children, forming friendships, and even sharing affection at home with cousins and his sister. His diet, once extremely limited, expanded with support from the educators, giving the family confidence to continue this progress at home. Their younger daughter, also thrived. Previously shy and reserved, she now greets staff with hugs and kisses, shows curiosity, and even practices new skills learnt at daycare, like using utensils. “You can see how safe and happy she feels here,” Arahia said.
So why Figtree? The family knew the organisation from their professional experience. “I had worked here before and knew the support ratios and inclusive environment were phenomenal,” Arahia explained. “But receiving that support firsthand has been eye-opening. It’s not just about education – it’s about nurturing, celebrating diversity, and providing individualised care.”
The family praised Figtree not only for its educators but for the organisation as a whole. From daily updates to immediate responses to questions, every interaction reassured them that their children were valued. Even during financial stress, Figtree supported them with dignity, demonstrating care beyond expectations.
“Attending Figtree has been a blessing,” James said. “Our children are happy, thriving, and loved. We can’t imagine them anywhere else. It’s the best decision we’ve ever made, and I wish we could stay here forever.”
