Responding Together

Campaign launch in the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel, North Sydney.

On 18 March, on the Vigil of the feast of St Joseph, the Josephite Justice Network in partnership with the Justice and Peace Office of the Sydney Archdiocese launched A Home for Every Neighbour – a 150-day campaign, grounded in dignity, conviction, and the urgent call to justice.

The choice of this moment was both symbolic and deeply intentional. St Joseph, a figure of quiet strength and steadfast care, knew the vulnerability of displacement and the uncertainty of seeking a safe place to live. His story speaks across time into present reality of homelessness and housing insecurity – a reality that continues to confront us in our own communities. In launching this campaign at the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel, North Sydney is to anchor our advocacy not only in compassion, but in moral clarity.

A Home for Every Neighbour is more than an initiative; it is a collective commitment to reimagine what is possible. At its heart lies a simple but uncompromising belief: that stable housing is a human right, and that a society is measured by how it holds those most at risk of being left behind.

The launch reflected this shared commitment. We were honoured to be joined by students and staff from Mount St Joseph Milperra; Bethany College Hurstville; Mary MacKillop College Wakeley; St Joseph’s East Gosford and Holy Spirit College Lakemba. The presence and creative involvement of all students and staff signalled both solidarity and hope.

Over the next 150 days, we will journey together through five organised stages: Awareness, Education, Relationship, Action and Commitment. We will listen deeply to those with lived experience. We will learn about the systems that create and sustain housing insecurity. We will build the language, the confidence, and the collective will to advocate for change. And we will act – through conversations, events, political engagement, and commitments that push beyond charity and toward justice.

A Home for Every Neighbour is both a vision and a demand – a call to shape a future where belonging is not conditional, and where the dignity of every person is upheld in the most fundamental of ways: through the security of a home.
