Responding Together

Ten Years in the Bush! With Julian Tenison Woods is a book written by Anne Player rsj focusing on our congregational co-founder, Father Julian Tenison Woods, and his time in Penola, South Australia from 1857 to 1867.

Published in 1982, the book “is a response to the question, ‘What kind of chap was Julian Tenison Woods?’,” as Anne shared in her introduction (1982).

In her updated introduction in 2000, Anne said, “The time [Julian] spent on the Penola mission seems to me to be one of the most integrated periods of his life. He participated in all aspects of the life of the district with flair and enthusiasm and his contemporaries appreciated his contributions.

“In late 1866 in the nostalgia of his imminent departure from Penola, he acknowledged the debt he owed to the people of the South East for the part they played in his ‘ten happy years’ in the bush.”
