Mary MacKillop Today proudly supports the International Day of Charity, observed each year on 5 September to raise awareness about the vital role of charitable work around the world.
What is the International Day of Charity?
Established by the United Nations in 2012, the International Day of Charity is an opportunity to recognise and support charitable efforts across the globe. It also provides a platform for charities, from grassroots community organisations to international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), to highlight the work they do to create positive change.
History of International Day of Charity
The date, 5 September, was chosen to commemorate the life and legacy of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who passed away on this day in 1997. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa dedicated her life to serving people living on the margins. Her unwavering compassion and commitment to fighting poverty continue to inspire people worldwide.
On this day, we don’t just remember her legacy – we strive to live it.
Why is the International Day of Charity important to Mary MacKillop Today?
Mary MacKillop Today proudly celebrates the International Day of Charity, a moment to honour the incredible work of charities globally and to acknowledge the dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors, and supporters. Together, we carry forward the mission of Saint Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Mary’s powerful call to “never see a need without doing something about it” remains central to everything we do. Through our education programs in Australia and overseas, women, men and children, like Juliana, are gaining access to education, practical life skills, and the chance to shape a better future.
Juliana is the youngest of five children living in a remote farming community in Timor-Leste. Her family often goes without food so she can attend school, because they believe education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Thanks to our generous supporters, Juliana is thriving through our Inclusive Early Education program. A highlight is our colourful mobile learning centre – a bus filled with books, music, toys and art supplies that brings joyful learning to rural communities. Local educators also work alongside families, building their confidence and skills to support children’s learning at home.
Today, Juliana dreams of becoming a teacher so she can help other children thrive, just like her.
